LE MUSE PER CORELLI
Saturday 12 June at 20h30
Juan
Diego Florez, the most acclaimed tenor of the moment in the Rossini and
Belcanto repertory, will be the star of an exceptional event on Saturday 12
June at the Teatro delle Muse. In one of his very few appearances in concert in
Italy, Florez will perform a recital in memory of Franco Corelli, the great
tenor from Ancona who recently passed away.
Le Muse per Corelli, a tribute by the city in which he was born and the
theatre which he inaugurated in 2002 when it reopened, promises to be one of
the most significant celebrations out of all those organised around the world
to commemorate this unforgettable artist, who was equally well-known at la
Scala theatre in Milan as well as at the Metropolitan in New York.
The participation of Juan
Diego Florez at the Le Muse per Corelli
evening is significant and bears testimony to the admiration that a great tenor
of today has for a great tenor of the past. Although having completely
different characteristics, Florez embodies the image of a charming and
out-of-the-ordinary singer, as was the phenomenal Corelli in his time.
On this occasion, the young
Peruvian tenor (revelation of the ROF – Rossini Opera Festival - in 1996) will
perform an extraordinary programme which
has been compiled in conjunction with the artistic director of the Teatro delle
Muse Lyrical Season, Alessio Vlad.
A real
tour de force comprising various style and genres that span from 18th-century
romantic opera to the Spanish zarzuela, and includes some very lyrical,
particularly beautiful and difficult arias performed by Florez for the first
time in Italy. The Peruvian tenor will begin with a role that is perfectly
suited to his style, the aria of the love escape, which takes place secretly at
night, “Pria che spunti in ciel l’aurora”, from The Secret Marriage by
Cimarosa (Italian première).
This
will be followed by “A te, o cara” taken from Bellini’s The Puritans (an opera
that just made its debut in Las Palmas, and will be performed in Italy for the
first time), the epitome of romantic opera: this aria is very intricately woven
and contains a risky high note near the end. Then, there are two interesting
pages taken from the zarzuelas
(traditional popular form of Spanish opera, which all the great Spanish-speaking
artists, from Carreras to Domingo to Caballé, have tried) El ultimo romantico by
Soutollo-Vert and El trust de los tenorios by Serrano. Tebaldo’s cavatina from The
Capulets and the Montagues by Bellini, Rinuccio’s aria from Gianni
Scicchi by Puccini, the very famous “La donna è mobile” taken from
Verdi’s Rigoletto and Almaviva’s acrobatic rondo from The
Barber of Seville by Rossini, which is Florez’s piece de resistance
(this a particularly energetic aria that has been recovered over the past twenty
years and which was inserted by Rossini in the final part of Cinderella for a mezzo-soprano), will
bring this difficult recital to an end. Vincent
Scalera, another internationally-acclaimed artist will accompany Florez on
the piano.
The
concert, which will take place thanks to the important contribution made by Unicredit, will be preceded by a
tribute to Franco Corelli, compiled by Enrico Stinchelli and Michele Suozzo,
which will include guests that were colleagues of the great tenor.
